Description - Apulia

Apulia, a region of southern Italy forming the heel of the "boot", is renowned for its whitewashed towns in the hills, their centuries-old farmland and hundreds of kilometers of Mediterranean coastline. Bari, the capital, is a vibrant university and port city, while Lecce is known as the "South Florence" because of its Baroque architecture. Alberobello and the Itria Valley are home to "trulli", stone houses with conical roofs characteristic of the region, suspended between nature, history, tradition, taste and spirituality, to visit twelve months a year.

From the sandy beaches of Torre dell'Orso and Porto Cesario to the rocky shores of Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca, where the calm and limpid Ionian Sea meet and the Adriatic Sea, an intense blue color, the possibilities for lovers of the sea are virtually endless: from Gallipoli "Pearl of Salento" to Gargano the "Spur of Italy" that stretches in the clear waters of the sea sheltering the beautiful Tremiti Islands.

Nature again plays the leading role with the Gargano and Murges National Park, with the wild Foresta Umbra, the salt marshes and the lakes. The marine protected area of Torre Guaceto, the deep ravines of Laterza and the dolines of Altamura - which with their remarkable landscapes characterize the interior territory of the region - are also worth visiting.

And for those who prefer to dive into history, Apulia offers a wide range of sites that evoke the ancestral origins of this land: from prehistory to Great Greece, the imperial era to the Renaissance, the glory of the Baroque of Lecce and Salento. The trulli, for example those from the Itria Valley, are an incredible testimony to the region's rural past, while many castles dot the south coast, evoking the time when goods and dangers came by sea.
